Please Do 10Q
Rosh Hashanah begins on Monday at sundown. Unlike the other Jewish New Years, the number changes (from 5785 to 5786), and we wish one another "shana tova"--happy year.
It's a happy holiday, but it kicks off a period of introspection, as we look at what we've done, who we've been, in the past year. We vow to make amends--to get back on the right path--and we ask to be forgiven and to be inscribed for blessing in the book of life.
In other words, we make New Year’s Resolutions. But these are Jewish resolutions, fitting for people who confess sins in alphabetical order and who communally confess that we have “smeared with lies” and “given false counsel.”
And that's where 10Q comes in. I can't remember how I heard about it, but I've been doing 10Q for four or five years. Here's how it works: You sign up. Every day for 10 days, they email a question that requires introspection. You do a narrative answer--not lengthy, but not a yes-or-no or a tally. At the end of the 10 days, you have a brief time to review your answers. Then you send them off to a vault. A year later, they magically appear in your inbox. You can review your answers and start a new set of questions.
It's enlightening, frightening, and highly useful to be reminded of the mood you were in on a specific day, in regard to a specific question, in a previous year.
I highly recommend 10Q. You don't have to be Jewish. If you want to be a better person in 5786, or 2026, it couldn't hurt. Today’s the best day to sign up. The questions start coming tomorrow.

I have been doing 10Q since 2008. I find it a very useful tool for self reflection. It is great feedback from my past self to my present and future self. Sometimes it is rewarding to see that I followed through on a good intention. Other times, well, I blew it again for another year and maybe it’s time to stop kidding myself!!
